Johnum’s Piece (2022)

Program Note:

For this piece, I wanted to make something that was well-suited Johnum’s wonderful musicianship and personality. Earlier this year, I heard a fabulous performance of Shostakovich’s icy, acerbic 8th string quartet by Johnum and his quartet. I decided to take the first four notes of this work and embed them throughout this short piece which, in contrast, is a sort of bright and joyous sprint, ending as a slow and contemplative meditation.
